Gel Biopolymer Electrolyte for DSSC and method to produce thereof
The present invention introduces a biopolymer dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) utilizing solvent free biopolymer hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) gel biopolymer electrolyte (GPE). Preparation of the GPE having composition of HPC:EC:PC:NaI:HMII or HPC:EC:PC:NaI:MPII, includes the utilization of suitable plasticizer, ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) to make solvent free GPE and HPC as biopolymer that serves as host, sodium iodide (NaI) as the dopant and iodine as redox mediator, and a choice of 2 ionic liquids, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII) and 1?hexyl?3?methylimidazolium iodide (HMII) at optimized ratio to enhance ionic conductivity and solar cell efficiency of the subsequent produced DSSC. Using the GPE, the DSSC has ionic conductivity as high as 7.04?10?3 S/cm, high conversion efficiency among the biodegradable polymer electrolyte based DSSCs, is environmentally friendly, nontoxic green energy generator, safe for daily use and comes at a low cost compared with other cells such as silicone based solar cells.
